Welcome to AussieChix!

AussieChix is the Australian regional chapter of LinuxChix, for women living in Australia, aimed at providing ways for women living in Australia to meet each other, talk about, and get involved in Linux, Free Software and related things.

AussieChix welcomes women interested in Linux or Free Software at any level of experience. If you haven't yet started using Linux, you might also be interested in some information about what it is and where to get it.

Men are also welcome to join AussieChix, as long as they understand that its purpose is "supporting women in Linux".

Please see Joining AussieChix for information about joining AussieChix and coming along to our events.

katspice is back!

I've finished my port of our original custom Drupal site theme, with desert colours and loads of pretty, to Drupal 6, and we're back in business.

Thanks to Mary Cudmore and Donna Benjamin, designers of the theme.

Donna Benjamin elected president of LUV

AussieChix member Donna Benjamin has been elected the 2008/2009 president of Linux Users of Victoria. Congratulations Donna!

iTNews coverage of IRC channel merger

Ashley Clark covered the news about our IRC channel merger in an article for iTNews: A/NZ women in Open Source gain momentum.

au.linuxchix.org outage: Monday 1st September

The au.linuxchix.org server will be down for maintainence Monday evening 1st September. This means that both http://au.linuxchix.org/ and http://conf.au.linuxchix.org/ will be unavailable at that time, as will the chix mailing list. The outage should just be from 5:30pm to 6pm.

New IRC channel: #aunzichix

By agreement the Australians and New Zealand Chix who hang out on LinuxChix IRC are merging into a new IRC channel, since we were often hanging out in each other's channels anyway.

Our new channel is #aunzichix on irc.linuxchix.org, for Australians, New Zealanders and Islanders. If you would like to join but haven't used IRC before see our IRC guide.

All former regulars of #aussiechix and #nzchix are invited to join us in our new channel.

Note: AussieChix and LinuxChix NZ are remaining separate chapters with their own websites, mailing lists, etc.

Planning for the LinuxChix miniconf @ linux.conf.au 2009 is underway

The lead organisers for 2009 are Robyn Willison and Sarah Stokely. If you want to help out, head on over to http://conf.au.linuxchix.org/ and also join the wlca list.

Website upgrade

I've just upgraded http://au.linuxchix.org/ and http://conf.au.linuxchix.org/ to Drupal 6. The benefits are, unfortunately, mostly behind the scenes. Some small changes:

  • you can now use OpenID to log in to your account once you've created it, go to "My account" and "OpenID Identities" to configure it
  • mailing list management is now fancier because it talks directly to Mailman through its web interface

I also hope that the persistant problem we've had with the site making people reset their passwords all the time is fixed by the upgrade.

What to call the combined AU/NZ/Islander IRC channel?
